Meeting the author – Ken Spillman

It was a bright summer afternoon at Jeevana. The children of classes IV and V gathered to meet the renowned author, Ken Spillman. Ken Spillman is one of Australia’s most talented and productive writers, editors, and reviewers. Ken Spillman, who has written almost 100 volumes, has worked on both fiction and non-fiction. He has won numerous awards and been nominated for many more. His engaging lectures on the power of books, the gift of imagination, and the innumerable advantages of creative thinking have delighted more than 90,000 kids. Who doesn’t enjoy listening to stories? Alongside the children, teachers at Jeevana happily sat down to enjoy his stories.

Thunderous applause from our aspiring writers greeted Dr. Ken as he entered the venue. Dr. Ramesh, our director, joyfully sat among our children and delightedly joined the storytelling session. Dr. Ken Spillman was introduced to our kids by our principal, Ms. Padma Chandrasekhar, a voracious reader. Our young writers Mithra and Shea Santhoshi honoured Mr. Spillman. When he learned that Shea had already published a book, ‘Galaxia’ he was thrilled and asked about it. Shea enthusiastically presented her book to Dr. Ken.

When he addressed our young writers, Mr. Spillman got down from the stage and plunged into the children for an astounding narration of his stories. ‘Vroom, Vroom, Vroom!’, he exclaimed. The sounds he generated for narration amused our kids. Mr. Spillman presented Jake, a fictional character, in his story Jake’s Concert Horror. It grabbed everyone’s attention because concert horrors are a common occurrence in everyone’s school experience, and they are always relatable. After narrating for an hour, he was seen among the children, answering a questionnaire. He responded to the queries posed to him by our aspiring writers with patience. Our little Jeevanites asked some fantastic, impromptu questions. Our kids have picked up a number of the author’s books, and they enjoy reading them. Meeting the well-known author Ken Spillman was an amazing event for all of us.

Astronomy Night Camp in Jeevana : 20th and 21st April, 2023.

Through the eyes of Shri Kamatchi ,11 A

April 21, 2023, was a day we arrived at School for the Astronomy night with stars in our eyes. After the night sky had become clearer,we were shown binary stars ,Mars and Venus through the telescope. The potluck organised by  school was a cosmic success . The mind-blowing video depicting the facets of the universe was a visual treat. The Q &  A session rounded up a very productive and fun-filled day as we departed reluctantly towards home.

Through the eyes of Mithra 9C

On the 20th of May, 2023, we attended Astronomy Night Camp in our school premises. We got to look through two different telescopes and observe Venus, non-binary and other clusters of stars in the night sky. Most of the students had never seen through a telescope before, so it was a very fascinating experience. I loved how the instructors were so patient and explained exactly how to observe the stars to each student.  Our favourite part of the camp was the animations and software that the instructor used to compare the sizes of moons, planets, and gradually increasing to the size of stars and even black-holes in outer space. This made us all realize how enormous our universe truly is.  It was super cool to see a visual, three-dimensional representation of all those heavenly bodies. Overall, it was space-tacular!

The  HM of Std 7 and 8 Ms.Premalalitha, & Ms Rochas Jeba, the Head of Make a Difference committee visited the Joseph Blind school at Paravai to donate two bureaus on the 16th of March. Sales day:04.02.23
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin
Jeevana always encourages the teaching-learning process through activities. ‘Sales Day’ is one such activity in Mathematics and  students of class 8 were involved in that. Different types of stalls were organized and students displayed their own handmade things and other products. They were very energetic and  enthusiastically managed their business. All the students used their own business strategy, spoke very well to attract customers, maintained their stalls and provided the customers with proper bills. They have learnt practical Mathematics actively through this activity. We are happy to see many future entrepreneurs & business magnates during this Sales day. The highlight of the activity is that all the students have given their profit to the charitable ‘Make a difference committee’ of the school.
FLIPPED CLASS METHODOLOGY:
This Methodology is one of the most trending and effective ones in the field of Education  presently .This is adopted in places like Finland and actually suits the mindset of the present generation. The class is divided into Five teams wherein each is  given a Team code and a Sub Topic to be prepared three days before the Flip class day. There will be a Team leader who is  appointed to sensitize the students of the team on the Sub- Topic provided. On the day appointed, the students will sit as a Team[Teams 1-5] carrying not the book but the prepared notes in a note pad. The teacher being the moderator, Says ‘Flip the class’  when one student from each Team, flips to the other team and shares his/ her contents and also receives from that particular team their sub- Topic that was allotted. Thus by the end of the 6th minute , the next flipping happens. Henceforth after flipping the class for 5 times , all the contents would have been shared with everyone and almost one member from each Team will be present in all the five Groups.
ADVANTAGES:
1.THIS METHODOLOGY CUTS OFF DISTRACTION AS IT BENEFITS ALL TYPES OF LEARNERS.
2.Since each student is involved in this methodology with definite Time constraints, they effectively deliver the contents ,as they take the role of a Teacher to that particular Team.
3.The culmination of the contents is done as a follow-up session in the form of a quiz ,questionnaire , connectors, Video pausing etc…
4.It is effectively retained in the students’ mind as its more of a PEER LEARNING.
5.Kids always love changes and we would be able to complete an entire chapter or a Subtitle within two consecutive periods, effectively

KG SPORTS DAY:

Children must take part in sports because it is essential for their fitness, health and positive overall development. When they participate in sporting activities, it has a positive impact on their overall growth. Sports enable children to learn about teamwork. When they play in a team, they learn to work with others to achieve a particular goal. This will have a positive impact on their overall growth and is beneficial for when they start working as adults in a team and not just as individuals. When children play sports, they learn how to conduct themselves in social situations. Along with that, they also learn how to bond with people and build relationships. Our cute munchkins initiated the sports day with their overwhelming welcome speech followed by a parade by all our little Santa’s dazzling dance moves. As the Christmas mood set in, our little babies were ready to build Mr.Frosty – the snowman. Then came the decoration part, where our buddies were busy decorating for the Christmas season . Finally they welcomed everyone with their beautiful green wreath which looked very vibrant and spread happiness among the crowd. Cute bunnies and crunches topped the show with our little bunnies hopping around happily eating their crunchy carrots. As the spectators waited eagerly, we saw Santa Clause coming to town bringing presents and joy to all of us.Our balancing beauties stole the show with their tremendous balancing skill and then came our cheer leaders who rocked the show with their beautiful performance once again. Evergreen trees have traditionally been used to celebrate winter festivals. The joy of the festival was brought to life with the scintillating and enchanting Christmas Tree. When children play sports, they learn how to conduct themselves in social situations. Along with that, they also learn how to bond with people and build relationships. As we all know, team sports help children to build stronger relationships. It teaches them respect. When children play team sports, they learn to respect other people, the rules, authority as well as their opponents. They learn to respect the rules and understand the consequences of not following the rules. Finally, it also helps them learn about leadership skills. When children play team sports, they learn to be accountable and responsible for their actions. They understand that they are accountable for their actions and this instils in them leadership skills. The Sports Day helped children explore their hidden sports interests, to build confidence and to inculcate a desire to learn new skills by watching their peers. It was a fun filled day for one and all.

Make a difference committee :

‘Make a difference’ committee in our school is a forum where the students of Std. XI get an opportunity to participate in social welfare activities. This year they had an opportunity to visit the ‘Birds Nest’ orphanage in K.Pudur.They collected basic amenities such as grocery, snacks, self care and hygiene products from the students of grades 3 and 4. The students of the orphanage were from 4th to 9th grades.  Even though the children were in a challenging environment, they were really happy and grateful to be  there.  In the hour that the committee members spent at the Home,  they learned to  appreciate all that they had in their  own lives that they would have taken for granted otherwise.
Jeevana undertakes such endeavours ,at the very least, twice in the academic year.

AZADI KA AMRIT MAHOTSAV–15TH AUGUST,2022

Azadi ka Amrit mahotsav was celebrated week-long with all the classes being involved in one independence-day- themed activity or another . Special songs were played and inspirational stories of Tamilnadu’s mighty contribution to India’s freedom struggle were relayed through the public address system..

Students from Kindergarten to class 11 decorated the classrooms and the noticeboards with beautiful drawings, paper craft works, posters ,collages and poems based on Indian Independence, India’s cultural heritage and patriotism.
In junior section, on a designated day , children had brought unique and extremely creative thiranga-themed snacks and lunch that their parents had prepared so thoughtfully . Children were exchanging Independence Day wishes throughout the day until the dispersal time.

Many other activities were conducted in the classrooms to awaken the spirit of national pride among students.

The week culminated on the D- day when Jeevana hoisted the tricolour with aplomb as the gathering of students and staff members saluted the fluttering flag . The Head Girl gave a rousing speech on how far India has come in the past 75 years and how far it needs to go .
In the current scenario where kids and teens are lured by the k-dramas ,anime and the western lifestyle in general, it is vital that they are reminded of the uniqueness of what our country has to offer to Indians and the rest of the world.

It’s high time we made Freedom count.

This gala day was a culmination of days of planning and assembling of a variety of games and activities relevant to the English language. Over one hundred interactive modules were presented by nearly 150 students to enthusiastic students who thronged the Sports Complex, the venue for the event.
Such events bring home the fact that learning ‘ dry concepts ‘ like grammar and figures of speech can be a breeze if dealt with in the right way.

INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY —21ST JUNE, 2022

In the fast paced world of deadlines and tests to crack; fast food and unlimited screen time; chronic illnesses and mental fatigue have begun to affect people of all age groups. Kids in the Junior section were educated on the benefits of Yoga by the Teachers. Students of classes 6 to 8 had special Yoga sessions, the highlight of which was the ‘surya namaskar’ . The benefits of Yoga were reiterated by the Yoga Teacher. . Students of classes 9 and above were given a brief audio session over the PA system by the Principal.
